Last year, I had so many individuals come up to me asking about our LGBTQ history.
Questions like…
What was Stonewall?
Who is Marsha P Johnson?
What are my rights in Michigan as an LGBTQ individual?
Who was the first transgender individual?
Were there transgender people back in the 60s?
How have gay rights changed over the years?
Who are the Westboro Baptists and why do they preach such hateful things to the LGBTQ community?
Were gays actually imprisoned for choosing to be the person they love in public?
The list goes on….
These questions made me realize very quickly, that even in our own community there is very little knowledge of the struggles we have faced throughout history. These questions led to the creation of The Tragedies & Triumphs Exhibit – Celebrating the History of the LGBTQ Community Through The Years.
This event was going to be an in person remembrance with local art pieces hung and videos of these tragedies and triumphs held at SideTraxx Video Dance Bar, in Traverse City, MI. Unfortunately, with so many events being cancelled due to COVID-19 and new restrictions upon opening, we moved to a virtual event, similar to our If You Could See Them Through My Eyes.
So stay tuned, as we release the virtual displays throughout the month and celebrate what our community has endured for decades! These people and events have impacted and created positive change to our own futures.
And next year…we will see you in person!
